Dr. Daniel Perl, a neuropathologist and the director of the repository states, “Little is known about the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury on military service members.

By studying these tissues, along with access to clinical information associated with them, we hope to more rapidly address the biologic mechanisms by which head trauma leads to chronic traumatic encephalopathy.” Research from the repository may provide information that will help the estimated 266,810 servicemembers and veterans throughout the United States who have sustained a TBI, including those in North Carolina.

Camp Lejeune recently held an art exhibit titled, Healing Wounds Through Expressive Freedom, which included the artwork of 30 marines and sailors from the base who participate in the arts program as a component of their therapy. One of the artists, Gunnery Sgt. Jeremiah Warnick describes how art has helped him with the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sharing that “for me, the process of painting relaxes me and gives me a focal point so things aren’t out of control.” Gayla Elliott, art therapist at Lejeune, describes the therapy as “healing,” saying that it helps to reduce anxiety because of its “calming and soothing effects on the nervous system.” Ms. Elliot finds the therapy helps combat veterans who come back with a lot of intense emotional energy, stating, “Art gives them an outlet for their rage and anger, their anxiety and stress. It gives those feelings a voice.”

Co-author Dr. Beth Ellen Davis, a pediatrician and retired U.S. Army colonel, states “when a parent goes away to war, the common typical response is that all children experience stress around that,” and that “most children adjust after a short period of time.”

For some children, this stress can become excessive and place them at risk for behavioral, social, and emotional problems. Military and civilian pediatricians and other health care providers are urged to be alert for stressors such as deployment on families and should ask if anyone in the family or close community has been involved in wartime experiences, and ask how the family is coping.
